The European Shakespeare Festivals Network (ESFN) was founded in Gdańsk, Poland on 4 March 2010. With the status of a foundation, the organisation will have its headquarters in Gdańsk, though the idea for the network emerged in 2006, during the 10th edition of the Shakespeare Festival in Gdańsk. Since that time, its founders have maintained close working relations through consultations, exchanges of information and know-how, and organizing international projects together. The network's headquarters are in Gdańsk, its founders are the directors of Shakespeare festivals in Poland, Romania, Hungary, Germany and Great Britain. Shakespeare Festivals from Spain, Czech Republic, Armenia and Russia have also declared their interest in joining.

The goals of the ESFN include: supporting Shakespeare festivals throughout Europe; promoting the works of William Shakespeare; co-organising educational projects; exchanging information and launching artistic initiatives; supporting artists, translators and scholars of the arts; fundraising.
