"Hamlet, or the End of Childhood," The Naxos Theatre Group, Chartres, France, directed by Ned Grujic
IMG_7285.JPGHamlet by the Naxos company is Shakespearian theatre taking place behind the closed doors of a children's room. Thomas Merceul, totally alone on stage, plays a teenager confronted with the disintegration of his family and the departure of his father. With the appearance of a new man in the family, the door of the boy's room closes even more so that it never opens again and does not let the usurper in. The only sign of yet another world existing apart from this room is the voice of the mother coming in from behind the door. The teenager, besieged within the four walls of his room, acts out, with the use of dolls and other toys, the artefacts of his prematurely broken childhood, the story of a young man – Hamlet, whose story is very similar to that of the teenager. Just like him, Hamlet is deprived of his father, wants to take revenge on “the third one” and to punish his mother. The play is quite original, based on a private meeting between the director and the actor looking for an area where classical drama meets love for the theatre and the experience of contemporary art, which is up-to-date and close to the audience. This French Hamlet is moving, thrilling and, paradoxically, also funny. It poses questions concerning the fate of broken families and the dilemmas of entering adulthood.
